More than 100 full-time and part-time jobs will come to Wokingham as a result of a planned new McDonald’s restaurant.
As revealed exclusively by Wokingham Today last week, the fast food giant has submitted an application for advertising consent for an advertising ‘totem’ on Finchampstead Road alongside the current Carpetright unit at Bridge Retail Park.
A spokesperson for Mcdonald’s told Wokingham Today: “We are excited to have submitted a planning application to open a new restaurant in Wokingham next year, bringing significant investment and up to 120 full and part-time jobs to the local area.”
However there has already been more than a dozen comments from residents who have registered their objections to the plans.
One resident, commenting on the advertising application, said the arrival of a McDonald’s in Wokingham will: “.. have a detrimental effect on the local community.
“Wokingham is a wonderful town with many local amenities, and the thought of such a fast food chain being built baffles me.
“The disturbance, anti-social behaviour and impact to the road congestion are guaranteed if this plan goes ahead, and I truly believe this build to be an over development.”
Another, noting the location said it is “.. notoriously difficult entering and exiting due to the constant traffic on Finchampstead Road so the idea of encouraging even more traffic queues in this area seems ridiculous as well as dangerous.”
Another wrote: “This will need considerable thought. and would need to see the full scope of plans.
“It is somewhat odd there’s no McDonalds in Wokingham,
“I’d certainly say that this location isn’t the right choice if it’s going to have a drive-thru option.”
The application for advertising is currently open for consultation until July 24.
