Samsung, the world leader in memory and storage chips, has launched its first 60TB SSD. This high-capacity SSD is made for enterprise use and is not for general consumers. The company also says it is possible to make 120TB SSDs, thanks to its new controller.
Samsung PM1743 is a 61.44TB SSD
While Samsung is an extremely popular SSD brand, its SSDs were previously limited to a storage capacity of 32TB. However, the company has now launched a 61.44TB variant of the PM1743 SSD (via Blocks & Files). This 60TB class SSD will compete with Solidigm’s D5-P5336 and Western Digital’s 60TB class enterprise SSDs.
The PM1743 uses Samsung’s 176-layer 7th Generation V-NAND (3D NAND) QLC memory and a proprietary controller. Its sequential read speed is 7.2GBps, while its sequential write speeds reach up to 2.0GBps. It has 1,600,000 random reads and 110,000 random write IOPS. It has an endurance of 0.26 drive writes per day (DWPD) for five years.
This new SSD will be available for servers in two form factors: U.2 and PCIe 4.0 x4. It will also be available in E3.S for the PCIe 5.0 x4 interface for high-storage-density machines. Its price and power consumption figures haven’t been disclosed yet. Similar drives reportedly cost around $7,000.
Samsung will have limited competition in the market, as its primary rivals, Kioxia, Micron, and SK Hynix, have yet to launch 60TB class SSDs.
