Britons in France and Italy warned of flight disruptions and risk of ‘unrest and violence’ when travelling

Must read

France and Italy are top of the list for many holidaymakers but they have been warned of potential risks when travelling this summer.

Flight delays, volcanic activity and the risk of demonstrations could impact travel and tourist safety.

Italy

Volcanic activity in the south of Italy is disrupting flights and could be dangerous for anyone in the area.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) warned: “Due to volcanic activity, local authorities have increased the alert levels for both Etna and Stromboli in the south of Italy. In the event of a volcanic eruption, follow the advice of local authorities.

“There are several active volcanoes in southern Italy. National emergency planning has been updated for Vesuvius as well as the Phlegraean fields, an area that remains active and which has experienced tremors in 2024.”

This has also caused chaos for travellers, with many flights disrupted.

The FCDO shared: “Catania airport is now open for departures, though the number of flights arriving is currently limited. If you are travelling to or from Catania, check with your travel provider or with Catania airport.”

France

This comes as those jetting off to France risk being caught up in political demonstrations, as these are particularly likely this weekend.

The FCDO warned: “Demonstrations, political gatherings or marches can take place with little or no warning, particularly in cities. Follow the advice of police and local authorities.

“While most demonstrations are peaceful, there is a risk of unrest or violence. If you’re near areas where demonstrations are taking place, stay aware of your surroundings and move away if there are signs of disorder.

“Elections taking place in France on Sunday 7 July could make demonstrations more likely.”

Anyone visiting the country just now should be vigilant as there is a risk these could become dangerous, the Government body warned.

Those in France faced travel disruptions throughout June due to planned industrial action by port workers and air traffic control unions.

This meant some ferry routes and flights across the country were impacted by diversions and cancellations.

Similar issues could continue for another couple of months as more industrial strike action is expected.

The FCDO added: “Check your operator’s advice before travelling, including where you are taking connecting flights.

“Until September, possible industrial action may cause disruption on the Paris public transport system (RATP). Check the RATP website for live service updates.”
