Calvert-Lewin a ‘great addition’ for Newcastle United but for fitness fears

Must read

Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be a ‘great addition’ to Newcastle United’s Premier League squad – if he can prove his fitness. Former United and Spurs winger Chris Waddle is a big fan of the Everton striker, who was linked with a move to Tyneside last month.

United opted not to follow up interest in the 27-year-old after learning Everton’s asking price, but he remains a player Eddie Howe admires, and with West Ham interested in Callum Wilson, it remains to be seen whether any interest is rekindled.

Calvert-Lewin has suffered with injury issues in the past, although he featured in 32 Premier League games for Sean Dyche’s side last season. Waddle, though, retains reservations about that injury record, while admitting he would improve United’s squad should the Magpies decide to make a move.

“Dominic Calvert-Lewin has done well in the Premier League, but there are so many doubts over his fitness.” Waddle told Lord Ping. “He’s had a lot of injuries over the last couple of years and he hasn’t been a player that Everton have been able to rely on, which is a shame.

“On his game, fully fit, he’s a player that I really like. The centre forward role at Newcastle is so important. The club need a forward that is going to be fit for an entire season. Unfortunately, Callum Wilson has had his own injury struggles. Isak has had a few too.

“If Dominic Calvert-Lewin joined the club fully fit, then it would be a great addition, but I can’t help but worry about his injury record and potential lack of availability.”
