Lando Norris topped a delayed and red-flagged Canadian Grand Prix Free Practice 1 for McLaren.
Heavy rain in the hour before FP1 meant cars were not able to get on track for 22 minutes after the planned start time of 1330 local, but the track quickly dried up to allow drivers to set flying laps late on whilst using the soft Pirelli tyres.
Norris pumped in a 1:24.435 effort on his attempt to jump ahead of Carlos Sainz, Charles Leclerc, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen in the late flurry of laps – although times were not representative and still nearly six seconds slower than the anticipated pole time.
Jack Doohan in for Esteban Ocon at Alpine only got three laps, and did not set a time owing to the conditions and a red-flag caused by Zhou Guanyu clipping a barrier at Turn 5 for Stake, triggering a brief suspension.
