Dan and Eugene Levy, the first father-son duo to host Emmys, brought new energy to the 76th Emmy Awards, and their opening monologue seemed well received by the star-studded crowd.
The riskiest joke by the Schitt’s Creek stars had to do with The Bear‘s record-breaking nominations as a comedy series.
“In the true spirit of The Bear, we will not be making any jokes,” Eugene quipped. (Plenty online seem to think the show should have been nominated as a drama.)
For what it’s worth, The Bear star and Emmy-winning actress Ayo Edebiri laughed at the line.
The Levys also pleaded with stars to keep their speeches short.
“In what can only be described as a cruel joke, two Canadians are in charge of playing you off tonight,” Eugene said.
“Confrontation in general is anxiety-inducing, especially for my 77-year-old father,” added Dan.
“I don’t like it,” Eugene agreed. “If you’re going to say anything meaningful, or emotional or, God forbid, political, just keep it short, because the pressure alone on me —.”
“Having to cut you off could kill this man,” Dan said.
