The year is still young, but 2024 has already given audiences a treasure trove of excellent TV shows to sink their teeth into.
In the ever-changing landscape of television production, still resting in the shadow of the SAG-AFTRA strikes of last year, the small screen has bounced back from adversity in a big way over the last few months, and promises to only get more enticing as 2024 winds to a close – with the likes of The Bear, The Boys, House of the Dragon, and more still to come.
The last several months have been particularly strong for the big world of comedy, with various sitcoms and dark social satires proving especially delightful, though there are still a multitude of heavy-hitting dramas in play alongside them.
From returning comedies about struggling public schools to animated tragicomedies and thrilling action flicks, the following shows vary wildly in tone and genre, but not in quality; some of the following productions will be strong contenders for best of the decade, let alone of the year.
With that in mind, from bold game adaptations to tear-jerking romantic dramas, here are the 15 best TV shows of 2024 (so far).
To say that Mary & George plays fast and loose with the facts of its historical setting would be a massive understatement, but such is its charm and the primary reason it works so well.
Based on the non-fiction book “The King’s Assassin” by Benjamin Wooley, Mary & George concerns scheming matriarch Mary Villiers (a ferocious, scenery-chewing Julianne Moore) who uses her son George (Nicholas Galitzine) to wriggle into favour with the troubled King James VI (Tony Curran).
It’s a delightfully twisted tale of political intrigue, though that’s merely the tip of the iceberg, because D.C. Moore’s drama is also a relentless feast for the senses. Foul-mouthed, sex-filled and violent, the show pushes the boundaries of taste at every turn, but emerges all the more entertaining for it.Â
Mary & George is a wild, mature ride, one that slips up from time to time as its twists its characters into knots, but from its performances to its energetic production, it’ll keep you hooked from its mysterious first frame to its brutal last.Â
