11 pictures that show city centre empty shops that are on the market

You don’t have to take many footsteps to see an empty shop in Nottingham city centre these days. A number of big brands have vacated units in the past couple of years.

Reasons for closures include relocating to bigger premises in the city, struggling to manage high costs and having other stores in nearby locations. Perhaps the most clear evidence is on Lister Gate – the once thriving street is now home to a number of empty units since the closure of Broadmarsh shopping centre.




The cost of renting one can be expensive for many businesses that might want to expand to the city. As a result, while still a shopping hub for those in Nottingham city and surrounding areas, and while still attracting residents of places not too far away such as Derby for a day out, there are a number of derelict sites in the city centre which have been unoccupied since the last tenants moved out – some months ago, some years ago.

The unit which was previously a Cancer Research UK store has remained empty for the past few years. It has a ground floor area of 180 sqm and a basement space of 120.77 sqm for a rent of £40,000 per annum.

The unit was formerly occupied by EE which has relocated to Clumber Street. The property has 5 floors with a total area of 427.1 sqm and it is available to rent for £35,000 or to buy for £650,000.

The 217 sqm premises was formerly a marketing suite for agencies Emora and Purple Reign. The upper office spaces and sales floor are now available to let for a rent of £25,000 per annum.

The outdoor store Blacks which relocated to Wheeler Gate left the unit empty late last year. A rent of £67,500 per annum is the asking price for this 249 sqm space.

The old McDonald’s unit went up for sale in April this year with three other restaurants remaining in the city centre. This large unit has a total area of 348.94 sqm and this is reflected in the rent of £130,000 per year.

The recently vacant shop unit which was occupied by Patisserie Valerie is now up for sale after being unable to reach a renewal deal in April. Part of the Exchange Arcade, the premises includes a 109.2sqm shop floor and a 103.2sqm basement area which is available to rent for £75,000 per annum.

This period building was formerly used as an estate agents with a ground floor space of 264.59 sqm. It is available to rent for around £60,000 to be used for retail or it can be suitable for other uses.

Located between Old Market Square and Broadmarsh, this unit was a former Pret café. The 111.74 sqm is suitable for retail or hospitality use with a rent of £65,000 per annum.
