10 ‘best fish and chip restaurants’ in UK named – 2 in same seaside town

Must read

A popular seaside town in North Yorkshire is home to two of the top 10 best chippies in the UK.

Earlier this year, Fry Awards  announced The Magpie Cafe and Trenchers in Whitby as two of the prestigious top 10.

The Magpie Cafe isn’t a traditional fish and chip restaurant, while it offers all the chip shop classics, it also boasts a more extensive seafood menu. Starters include king prawn tails in garlic butter, calamari, poached salmon and homemade Whitby crab bisque.

Mains include a range of fish options from classic cod to rarer choices such as plaice, woof, sole and halibut fillet.

One diner said: “We visited twice on a holiday in Whitby. It remains our favourite restaurant, there’s a buzzy atmosphere, fabulous choice and quality of fish at very reasonable prices and a friendly service.”

Whitby’s other winning chip shop, Trenchers, is located on the iconic harbour. With options including seafood salads, crab, lobster, fresh fish, homemade pies and lasagnes, the menu again offers more than the average chip shop and something for everyone.

One guest said: “This cannot be beaten for fish and chips! It was an exceptionally good meal with mushy peas, a generous amount of tartar sauce, perfectly cooked chips and what can we say about the fish? It had a lovely taste and delicious batter. Not only this but all the staff were so friendly and helpful.”

The eight other chip shops awarded are:

  • Fish City, Belfast

  • Harbour Lights, Falmouth, Cornwall

  • Lakeside Fish and Chips, Poole, Dorset

  • Linford’s Traditional Fish and Chips, Market Deeping, Lincolnshire

  • Maltings Fish And Chips, Baldock, Hertfordshire

  • Pier Point Fish & Chips, Torquay, Devon

  • The Wee Chippy, Anstruther, Fife

  • Trenchers Spanish City, Whitley Bay, Newcastle upon Tyne
